Installation of a Server

The 'Server' ist the centralised data-storage-unit within the enterprise.
Usually, there is a 'streamer' for data-catridges attached to do a daily back-up of essential company-data.
Optional there might be one or more printers attached which can be utilized from all workstations within the enterprise.

Prerequisites

Installation of the Server with Linux Fedora Core 5

Most actual version (as of November 2006) of the Linux-operating-system.
Full support for external devices to be connected via USB (printer, scanner, cameras).

* General knowledge how to operate personal-computers (PC); additionaly how to configure a PC to be able to boot from a CD to install the operating-system.
* CDs with the Linux-version Fedora Core 5.

Installation of the Server with Linux Fedora Core 3

Installation no longer recommended !
Hardware-requierements are a bit smaller than with Fedora Core 5. In return, the support for USB-devices is not as technically mature as within bei Fedora Core 5.

* General knowledge how to operate personal-computers (PC); additionaly how to configure a PC to be able to boot from a CD to install the operating-system.
* CDs with the Linux-version
Fedora Core 3.

Installation of the Server with Linux RedHat Version 9

Installation only recommended as 'test-system' with 'Oldtimer'-hardware
This version runs on a PC with Pentium I Prozessor and 32 MB RAM.
Inadequate support for the USB-interface.

Recommended as a test-version if you just got hold of a 'weak' computer.

* General knowledge how to operate personal-computers (PC); additionaly how to configure a PC to be able to boot from a CD to install the operating-system.
* CDs with the Linux-version
RedHat 9.

Installation of the Server with Linux RedHat Version 7.1

Installation recommended for the purpose to have another piece for a museum !
Still runs on computers with a 80486 Prozessor and 16 MB RAM.
Installation just recommended to demonstrate how Linux looked in the year 2000.

* General knowledge how to operate personal-computers (PC); additionaly how to configure a PC to be able to boot from a CD to install the operating-system.

Installation of a Router

The 'Router' handles the connection between the internal network and the internet.
To achieve the connection to an Internet-Service-Provider (ISP), a modem for an ADSL- / DSL-connection (Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line / Digital Subscriber Line), a modem for a cable-tv-network operator or even an older modem for a dial-up-connection can be used.

Additionally, this machine can be used as a printer-server and a telefacs-server accessible by all workstations on the internal network.

Prerequisites

Installation of the Router with the operating-system Linux Fedora Core 5

Most actual version (as of November 2006) of the Linux-operating-system.
Full support for external devices to be connected via USB (printer, modem).

Requiered if the connection to the Internet-Service-Provider (ISP) is via a modem with USB-connection.

* General knowledge how to operate a personal computer (PC); additionally knowledge how to configure a PC to boot from the CD-drive – to install from the provided CDs.
* CDs with
Linux-Version Fedora Core 5.

Installation of the Router with the operating-system RedHat-Linux Version 8.0

Recommended when the Router should be installed on a power-efficient notebook needing less space than a PC in a desktop- or tower-case.
Runs on machines with Pentium I Prozessor, 64 MB RAM and 2,5 GB harddisk.
Lacking support for USB-devices; a
connection to an internet-service-provider using an USB-modem is difficult or impossible (depending on the vendor and model of the modem) .

* General knowledge how to operate a personal computer (PC); additionally knowledge how to configure a PC to boot from the CD-drive – to install from the provided CDs.
* CDs with Linux Version RedHat Version 8.0.

Installation of the Router with operating-system Linux Fedora Core 3

Installation no longer recommended !
Hardware requierements are less than with Fedora Core 5. In return, USB support is not yet perfect..

* General knowledge how to operate a personal computer (PC); additionally knowledge how to configure a PC to boot from the CD-drive – to install from the provided CDs.
* CDs with
Linux-Version Fedora Core 3.

Installation of the Router with RedHat-Linux 7.1

Installation only recommended if the aim is to have an exhibition-object for a museum !
Still runs on machines with 80486 processors and 16 MB RAM.
Only recommended to demonstrate, how Linux looked 2000 a.D.

Application-programs (system- and business-related)

The following tables list, ordered by topic, links to detail-documents covering the following subjects:
System-Applications for the Router
► System-Applications for the Server
► System- and Business-Applications for a Workstation with Linux
► System- and Business-Applications for a Workstation with Windows

System-Applications for the Router

Applications running on the Router are not directly accessible by an user.
Their purpose is to provide 'infrastructure' (connection to an internet-service-provider, making printers useable for all workstations, etc,).
The following list shows the links to the documents with installation instructions of individual system-applications – but is not a requierement-list to install all of the listed applications.
The selection of the applications to install depends on the demands made to the Router (e.g. internet-connection, providing printer-services).

Setup of Printers

If one or more printer are connected, the fitting driver(s) must be selected and configured.
Many printer-models are recognized and configured by the Linux-Hardware-Detection. In that case, the 'installation' is limited to a selection of the fitting paper-size.
If the printer was not recognized, the interface and the correct driver for the printer has to be selected.

This document also covers a text-based installation-instruction. This is helpful when no GUI (graphic user interface) is installed. That might happen, if a 'weak' powered PC is used as Router.

* Operating system Linux (RedHat Version 8.0 or higher) installed
