Open-Office ist a business-application for text-processing, spreadsheet-calculation, graphics and presentation and further functions for document-processing on a PC.

Prerequisites:

Installation-instructions:

General Installation on a Workstation:

To install the package for OpenOffice it is recommendet to log-on as user 'root'.
This prevents interuptions due to missing access-rights.

The actual version (1.1.2, as per August 2004) can be downloaded from the following site:
http://download.openoffice.org .

Log in as 'root', open a Terminal-window, change to the download-directory and unpack the downloaded file - here are the commands:
cd /download_directory
tar zxvf OOo_1.1.2_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz

(The name of the downloaded file can be different depending on the actual version and language.)

The following instructions are an excerpt from the 'Setup Guide' which can be found under the unpacked files (/download_directory/OOo_1.1.2_LinuxIntel_install/SETUP_GUIDE.pdf) .
It describes the installation of OpenOffice as a 'Multi-User and Network Installation' which is recommended on a Linux**-Workstation with more than on user.
A detailed description can be found in the 'Setup Guide', Chapter 4.

If not already done logon as 'root', start the GUI (startx), open a Terminal-window, change to the directory with the unpacked file and start the graphical installation - here are the commands:
cd /download_directory/OOo_1.1.2_LinuxIntel_install

./setup -net

Follow the advices in the graphic installer or the Setup Guide, respectively.
During the installation-process you will be asked for a Installation directory where the OpenOffice or components will be installed.
Please notify the name of this directory, it will be referred during the 'Configuration for a dedicated user' as
/OO_program_directory .

Configuration for a dedicated user:

To configure OpenOffice for a dedicted user, the GUI (GNOME in our case) must be terminated and the current user ('root') must log-off (exit).

Thereafter logon as the user (e.g. 'developer01'), OpenOffice should be configured, start the GUI (startx) and open a Terminal-window.
Change to the OpenOffice program-directory and start the graphical installation:
cd /OO_program_directory/program
./setup

Follow the advices in the graphic installer or the Setup Guide, respectively.

Adding a Launcher:

The adding of a 'Launcher' is described under Add a Launcher .
The
Parameters are
Name: OpenOffice
Generic name: (leave blank)
Comment: OpenOffice Integrated Office Solution
command: /home/developer01/OpenOffice.org1.1.2/soffice

(where developer01 is the user in this example)

Type: Application (select)
Icon: /OO_program_directory/share/icons/ooo_gulls.png
Run in Terminal:
No (do not check)

Additional Hints:

The part General Installation on a Workstation can also be done on a Server.
The directory containing the
OO_program_directory) can be mounted (see Auxiliary Linux**-service-applications / Mount directories on a remote computer) on workstations within the network and the part Configuration for a dedicated user
can be done on each workstation.

Test:

Klick onto the created Launcher and OpenOffice will open an empty text-document.
