Service-applications are programs, which do not directly belong to the operating-system of a computer.
Nevertheless, service-applications are requiered to perform business-applications.
Usually service-applications are not visible to a standard-user.

Prerequisites:
The installation of the operating-system (RedHat**-Linux** 7.1 or RedHat**-Linux** 9) as decribed in the document 'Installation of the Server with Linux** (RedHat** 7.1)' respectively 'Installation of the Server with Linux** (RedHat** 9)' was performed successfully.

Installed service-applications:

Printer Setup under RedHat-Linux 9 or Fedora Core 3

Installation of one or more printers; either with command-line tool or graphic-tool.

Shutdown of a computer after a predefined time

A computer, which should not be running 24 hours / day can be switched off after a predefined running-time.

This service enables the access to a locally attached printer from other machines running Linux**.

SAMBA-Server

The Standard-Application-Message-Block-Architecture-Server provides the defined directories as network-drives.
With this method, computers in the network with Windows** as operating-system can use the network-drives like local drives.
Additionally printers on the Server can be defined to be shareable for other computers in the network.

Java-Runtime-Environment

Java is a programming language which was developed with the intention, that programs written in Java can be executed on computers with different operating-systems.
In contrast to other programming-languages programs written in Java do not need special coding for a particular operating-system.
To enable the execution of Java-program on a particular operating-system, a Java-Runtime-Environment (JRE) or a Java-Development-Kit (JDK) must be installed as a service.

JBoss Application-Server

The JBoss-Application-Server is a special service, that controls and administers Enterprise-Java-Beans (EJBs).
EJBs contain program-code for application-programs.
These EJBs can be called from client-programs running on workstations and provide business-functionality to users.

Databases

Databases store data on a storage-medium (e.g. the harddisk of the computer and allow to search and retrieve the stored data according to specified criteria.
